A handful
of government-supported construction projects are expected to begin making a
dent in Sarnia-Lambon's waiting list for affordable housing, including for a
growing number of seniors in need of a safe and affordable place to live.
Age
figures from the 2016 census released earlier this month by Statistics Canada
found the 27,295 residents of Lambton County age 65 and over are 21.6 per cent
of its population. That compares to the 15.5 per cent age 14 and younger.
Sarnia-Lambton's
average age was 43.9 per cent in the census that shows Lambton County,
including Sarnia, is continuing down the road to becoming an older community
with a growing need for affordable housing
Seniors
traditionally make up about 25 per cent of the waiting list for affordable
housing in Lambton County and account for a similar percentage of the tenants
in the county's 830 rent geared-to-income units, said Kelly Hall, manager of
the county's Housing Services Department.
