Canatara
Beach was a delight for dogs, and their owners, Saturday, as hundreds were
expected at the waterfront for the second annual Doggie Paddle Beachfest.
“It’s
just a really good day for dogs and the dog rescues and all of that stuff,”
said Julie Moorehouse, 48, who spent some time in the water with her
four-year-old golden doodle Max, while others played in the surf in a
fenced-off section of beach.
“I wish
we had this all the time,” she said.
Along
with the beach and another fenced-off section in the nearby park, there were
water and land race courses, a barbecue, vendors, and rescue dogs on hand.
“We have
dogs that people can meet if they’re looking to add a pet to the family,” said
organizer Jenilyn Sheppard.
Proceeds
raised were going to organizations like CK Animal Rescue, Save Me Rescue and
Gentle Jakes Coonhound Rescue and Save Me Dog Rescue.
“The goal
is to help with the adoption process, the advertising process, and find homes
for all these dogs that they have,” said Sheppard.
She
launched the event last year after being inspired visiting a dog-friendly beach
community in California.
