Major Projects Boost Sarnia's Economic Statistics.

From Paul Morden, Sarnia Observer.

While the number of building permits for new homes in the city is down, Sarnia is on pace to record another overall strong year for construction.

By the end of November, the total value of construction permits issued by city hall already totaled $104.4 million.

That’s up from a total of $103.4 million in 2016.

“The numbers have been good the last two years,” said Alan Shaw, the city’s director of planning and building.

“The numbers are a little skewed because we’ve had some major projects.”

In 2016, Lambton College took out building permits for $47 million in expansion and renovation work that continues at its site on London Road.

This fall, the Lambton Kent District School Board took out a permit for a $23.4-million renovation project to turn the former St. Clair Secondary School site on Murphy Road into the new home for Great Lakes Secondary School.

“We did have some slow years through 2011 and 2013, but we’re getting a little busier again,” Shaw said.

Earlier this month, Nova Chemicals announced plans to spend $2 billion over four years in neighbouring St. Clair Township on a new polyethylene plant and an expansion of its existing Corunna site.
