The Little College that Could: Lambton College Wins $6.3 Million in Research Grants.

Lambton College has received $6.3 million to help establish three centres for applied research.

The college in Sarnia held an event Wednesday to celebrate funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to establish a Bio-Industrial Process Research Centre and the Lambton Energy Research Centre, and funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund for the college's Centre for Industrial Material Development.

That funding will be used to buy advanced equipment for applied research, allowing the centre to operate as a regional hub for industrial material development projects, while providing services to industry to improve, develop, test and bring to market new materials and products.

The Centre for Industrial Material Development and the Lambton Energy Research Centre were established this year by the college. The Bio-industrial Process Research Centre was established in 2015, and provides bio-industry partners with the ability to conduct applied research, as well as provides services to test and commercialize technologies and products.

“Lambton College has distinguished itself as a leader in applied research and development,” said Sandy Marshall, chairperson of the college's board of governors.

Lambton College Gets $2.3 Million for Applied Research.

A fuel cell reliant on acid-loving bacteria could be a “game-changing technology” for green energy generators, says the man heading up applied research into the technology at Lambton College.

“It is definitely cheaper than your regular conventional fuel cell. I can tell you that,” said Shahram Karimi, industrial research chair.

Instead of the typical hydrogen-oxygen reaction relied upon in fuel cells for energy storage, the bio-based battery relies heavily on micro-organisms sourced from hot springs in California, he said.

Devouring iron, they supply the electron exchange necessary for the storage technology to work.

For the past three years, researchers at Western University have been crunching data for London-based BioGenerator Energy Solutions, and they’ve turned to Lambton to test the idea at the college’s Sustainable Smart House – which uses wind and solar to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. It also demonstrates other green energy applications.

Federal Government Provides $12-Million for Biomass R & D.

Sarnia-Lambton's hunt for bio-industry jobs received a $12-million boost Monday from the federal government.

Navdeep Bains, the minister of innovation, science and economic development, announced the funding Monday for Sarnia-based Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) during an event at the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park.

In June, Ontario announced $3 million in new funding for the initiative, created in 2008 to help Sarnia-Lambton diversify its fossil fuel-based industrial base by attracting companies making fuel and chemicals from plants and other organic raw materials.

BIC was formed with $15 million in federal funding, and the new funding from Ottawa and Queen's Park is expected to help keep it running for the next four or five years, said Murray McLaughlin, the agency's outgoing executive director.
