Developer Eyes Old Devine St. School Property.

From Tyler Kula, Sarnia Observer.

A long-empty former school building in the city’s south could be the site for a new $41-million dementia-care and independent seniors living residence.

Overture Investments Inc. spokesperson Francesco (Max) Chieffallo provided basics Monday to Sarnia city council on his private development company’s plan to transform 321 Devine St. – where the former Devine Street School has sat boarded up since 2010 – into a new facility offering state-of-the-art care for people with dementia.

Details were sparse, but, he said, the facility would be built in phases, with a likely five-floor, 80-to-140-bed dementia build first on the docket.

The project overall, he said, would include 138 full-time positions for nurses, personal support workers, administrators, food service workers and others, and would inject about $8.6 million into Sarnia’s economy via those jobs and trickle-down spending.

Plans are to provide more details, he said, after a formal application is made to city hall.
