From Paul Morden, Sarnia Observer.

More than half of the 143 Sarnia-Lambton businesses filling in this year's EmployerOne Survey say they plan to hire this year.

In total, businesses taking part in the annual survey for the Sarnia Lambton Workforce Development Board estimated they plan to hire 1,086 workers in 2017.

“Our employers are positive,” about what's happening in the community, said Shauna Carr, executive director of the workforce development board.

Some 70 per cent of the businesses completing the board's fourth annual survey said they hired in 2016, taking on a total of 1,971 new workers at some point during last year.

“They're pretty typical for where they have been for every year we've done the survey,” Carr said.

“We don't see any huge jumps, but conversely we don't see any huge declines either, so we like that.”

Nearly half of the businesses in the survey have 10 or fewer employees, and 67 per cent of their employees are in permanent, full-time posts.
